why free flower?

A collage of family photos surrounded by colorful flowers with text that reads 'free flower'.

i was diagnoised with Endometriosis in 2017. in 2018, after a trip to north carolina, at the ocean’s shore, i was given the name free flower.

at the time, i didn’t know the full meaning.

i only knew that my body was asking me to listen—to tend to my womb and begin the work of healing from the inside out. that season guided me back to birth work, to plant medicine, to somatic practice, and to art and poetry as prayer. through healing, i became an artist by awakening an ancestral gift for painting and illustration. the more i created, the more deeply i connected to my joy, to self-advocacy, and to the courage it takes to leave behind what no longer serves me.

in my healing, i was led to travel. to explore other cultures, but also to explore different environments. as i traveled to places with cleaner air, fresher water, and access to healthy, locally grown food (and herbs) i noticed my periods were shorter, painless, and i felt emotionally balanced.

i realized that what i had been battling was not a result of my own inability to handle pain, but it was connected to my environment, where i lived and where i came from. i spent years archiving stories, pictures, and interviews of the women in my bloodline. unearthing their womb stories and finding so many connections between the trauma i experienced and also the spiritual gifts i possessed.

years later, in 2025, my grandmother transition. in her transition, we learned she had been adopted and that her birth name was flowers, with family roots in north carolina.

free flower was never just a name. it was my assignment and a confirmation that this work is for my lineage. for healing what’s been held in silence within myself, my bloodline, and within all women.

this is my offering to them and to us.

because you, too, have an assignment that has been passed down through your bloodline. there is a gift waiting for your full body yes so it can come alive. even if you haven’t received the confirmation yet,

your body remembers.

your spirit remembers.

your ancestors are still speaking.
